Read a direction, then examine its conditions

The Five of Swords asks what a victory costs. A dispute may be won in a way that damages trust, cooperation, or your own standards. Examine the terms of the contest before deciding that remaining in it is the only strong response.

Use an outcome position responsibly

An outcome card can summarize where a pattern seems to lead if relevant conditions continue. It cannot guarantee an event or tell you what another person will choose.

  1. Name the present pattern that the card appears to describe.
  2. Consider what could disrupt or complicate that pattern: Reversed, there may be room to stop the contest and repair its effects, or resentment may be continuing after the argument ends. A truce needs more than exhaustion.
  3. Identify a choice that remains open to you: Decide which result matters more than winning the immediate exchange.
